School Resource Officer

The school resource officer position was created as the direct result of Scotts Valley High School being added to the Scotts Valley Unified School District. The purpose of this position is to help provide a safe school environment for students, school personnel, and the visiting public at Scotts Valley High School. The SRO will strive to deter criminal activity on campus and be accessible to students to create a positive relationship as well as act as a mentor. The SRO will provide education to students on a wide range of topics and act as a liaison between the police department, school administrators, and the public. The SRO will enforce and uphold criminal laws and school policies.

The SRO's assignments include:

  • Campus security
  • Investigating crimes
  • Deterring violence and criminal activity
  • Issuing citations and making arrests

The SRO is in charge of the D.A.R.E. program at Scotts Valley High School. The SRO may also conduct presentations on a variety of topics including:

  • Laws
  • Conflict resolution
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexual harassment
  • Child abuse, molest, and neglect
  • Gang awareness
  • Guns and violence
  • Court procedures
  • Drug/alcohol awareness

The SRO also assists with prevention campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week and Teen Court. The SRO attends school organizational meetings, provides counseling when needed, assists with school events, conducts traffic enforcement and administers in-house diversions for students who have been arrested.
