PATROL
Patrol acts as the front line of the department
in providing services to the community and carrying out the mission
of protecting lives and property. The division is staffed with one
division commander, four sergeants, and ten patrol officers. This
division also incorporates the traffic unit and the department's
training unit. Patrol officers are responsible for providing the
community's basic public safety services.
Officers
are expected to handle a variety of calls that involve criminal
issues. Officer also handle non-criminal calls such as lost and
recovered property, assisting citizens in need, mentally disabled
and suicidal persons, wires down, missing persons, natural disasters,
and intrusion alarms. In 80% of these calls officers are expected
completely handle the investigation and and produce the appropriate
reports required. The remaining 20% are referred to the Investigations
Unit for follow-up.
Citizens most often identify police services with
the uniformed officer, as that is who they see patrolling the streets.
Additionally, uniformed officers initially respond to all calls.
Although calls for service continue to rise, the overall crime trends
reflective of Scotts Valley are extremely positive. The department
believes that crime prevention and education programs presented
by the department have a positive effect in helping achieve the
goal of reducing crime in the city. Patrol looks forward to providing
a continued high level of service to our community.
