Bicycle Patrol Bicycle patrol has been very successful in our city. Officers are more accessible to citizens and merchants and are therefore able to assist people with a wide range of issues and problems. These issues include such things as traffic hazards, shoplifting, embezzlements, suspicious persons, and many others. By being mobile in highly populated areas, such as shopping centers, officers are able to take quick enforcement action. The department has two Raleigh FT 500 21 speed mountain bikes. Each bike is specially made for police service and is marked and identified accordingly. These bicycles are equipped with strobe lights, horn, sirens, battery operated headlights, and flashing red lights. In addition, the bikes are equipped with special bags to carry the equipment an officer needs in order to do their job. Because an officer may have to get to an emergency detail in a hurry, each bicycle is equipped with a Zap motor which allows speeds up to 30 miles per hour. These motors assist the officers with time consuming steep hills.
