Antique Car Project
In
July 1996, the Scotts Valley Police Officer Association embarked
on a community project that involved the restoration of the city's
original police car, a 1967 Ford Galaxy Intercepter. It was hoped
that this vehicle, once restored, would be utilized as a tool for
delivering our many crime prevention programs that we offer the
youth of the community such as DARE, bicycle/pedestrian traffic
safety programs, stranger danger programs, etc. It has been the
experience of this department that having specialized equipment
such as McGruff dog, talking police car, etc., focuses the attention
of the youth to greatly assist them in understanding and remembering
the valuable information presented at these crime prevention presentations.
Additionally, the SVPOA felt that it would be good to restore the
original police vehicle for historical purposes.
A committee was established with Officers Allan
Mellon and Bill Adams as the Chair Persons. The original committee
members consisted of Vernon Hart, Al Costa, Steve Smith, Joann Pursley,
Chief Walpole, Captain Bush, Lt. Lind and Officer Mike Dean. The
first phase of the project consisted of finding a vehicle in fairly
good condition as well as the radio, siren, roof lights and other
associated equipment which would have been on the original Scotts
Valley Police Cruiser. As this project was solely funded by generous
donations of money, time and services, the committee was responsible
for the necessary fundraising. Numerous businesses, community service
clubs and citizens contributed to this project.
The correct year, make and model vehicle was found
in Dallas, Texas. The "Custom" emblems were found in Tennessee
and the classic black and yellow octagon E license plates were from
San Francisco. The "Al Cheney" license plate frame is
also historically correct. The first police cruiser was from Al
Cheney Ford, which is no longer in business. (Below) The committee
was very meticulous in obtaining the exact parts for the cruiser.
